Frequently Asked Questions
about Spaying and Neutering |
What do "spay"
and "neuter" really mean?
Female dogs and cats are spayed by removing their uterus and
ovaries, and male dogs and cats are neutered by removing their
testicles. |
How much does it cost to spay or neuter my pet?
Income guidelines are considered and
proof of income is requested prior to receiving these services for
the animals. In general, those eligible families should be in an
income range of $40,000 or less annually, per household. If you
make more than $40,000 a sliding
scale of fees, based on income, is available.
Fees for the Animals are:
Cats $30 (includes a rabies
shot)
Kittens $15 (5 months old &
under)
Dogs $40 (includes a
rabies shot)
Puppies $20 (5 months & under)
|
How can you charge so little?
Spay Okalahoma is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping
control the pet overpopulation. As such, the organization
seeks donations and grants from supporters including individuals
and foundations, which help subsidize the full cost of operation.
Additionally, fees charged for surgeries help offset expenses.
Volunteers help staff the clinic, which contributes to limiting
manpower expenses. |
How long do they
have to stay at the clinic?
Pets are brought to the clinic before 9am, and are ready to
return home by late afternoon. |
What is the
recovery time?
Most pets will be doing well within 48 hours following
surgery. Pet owners are given instructions regarding food,
water, housing, and exercise for the best outcome following
surgery. |
|
Can animal
organizations use Spay Oklahoma?
Yes, humane organizations throughout the area can
make arrangements to use the clinic for spay and neuter of their
animals prior to being placed for adoption, or they may refer
adopting families who meet income guidelines to the clinic. |
|
Who can use
Spay Oklahoma’s services?
Our aim is to reach individuals and families who
are unable to access veterinary care for their pets, and whose
pets are at risk of unwanted pregnancy and reproduction, and who
will use these veterinary services when available at a reduced
cost. |
Who performs
the surgeries?
All
veterinarians performing surgery at Spay Oklahoma’s clinic are
licensed and practicing in Oklahoma and are experienced in the use
of safe procedures for spaying and neutering of dogs and cats.
|
Will the surgery be painful for my pet?
Modern
veterinary procedures and anesthetics offer no pain during surgery
and only moderate discomfort afterwards. Your pet will be up and
about after 24 hours, and will resume completely normal activity
in about 48 hours. Most animals recover and heal much faster than
people do. |
How early can I have my pet spayed or neutered?
Modern veterinary medicine in cooperation with humane and animal
interest groups are now offering spays and neuters to pets as
early as 6 weeks of age. Most studies have concluded so far that
there are no ill or developmental effects from this early
procedure. And in fact some owners adopting pets from shelters
(small puppies and kittens) are now able to adopt altered animals
and not have to worry about the procedure at all. If
possible females should be altered prior to their first heat
cycle. |
|
Won't my pets personality change?
If anything, your pets personality will change for the better.
Females are more docile, and affectionate, and males are less
likely to be aggressive or want to roam. Any way you look at it,
the benefits of a longer healthier life and a more positive
personality are a win-win situation for both you and the dog |
